Puto or steamed muffins is one of the native merienda
of the Philippines. You can buy it on
any market places. Steamed muffins
varies colors and taste .
But it’s probably one of the favorite merienda of the Filipinos. It is affordable;
price ranges from 50 to 70 pesos when buying a half kilo for small ones and 5
pesos for one piece of larger ones. But how do they make puto or steamed muffins? Here are
some simple recipes…
HOW TO MAKE PUTO (STEAMED MUFFINS)

Ingredients:
·
1 ganta ordinary rice, soaked in water overnight
and ground to make thick rice batter (galapong)
·
2 kilos sugar
·
½ can baking powder
·
10 salted eggs, sliced or coarsely shredded
(here you can use cheese or anything you like)
Procedure:
1.
Wash rice thoroughly. Soak overnight.
2.
Grind the rice with enough water to form a thick
batter.
3.
Add sugar and baking powder. Stir until smooth.
4.
Fill muffin pans (or cast iron moulds) 2/3 full
with mixture and top with one or two slices of red eggs.
5.
Arrange pans on a steamer (pasingawan).
6.
Pour enough water in a carajay ( about ¼ way up)
and place steamer.
7.
Steam for 20 minutes or until puto is firm or
when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Add water to the
carajay when necessary.
8.
Without dinuguan*, serve with grated fresh
coconut.
*Dinuguan or blood stew is a viand
in the Philippines that is commonly serve with puto or steamed muffins
